I personally suspect that the Flying Saucers actually were fireballs from multiple large meteors coming in vertically over the eyewitnesses’ fishing boat. The material is friable, so a large body might easily shatter from tides. (Comet nucleus? Cometary material EVER been found in meteorites?!! Nope.) And then ‘lava slag’ rains down on the boat. Around 3 am on 26 December 1980 an Unidentified Flying Object was reported by a security patrol near the East Gate of RAF Woodbridge. Servicemen initially thought it was a downed aircraft but, upon entering the forest to investigate, they saw many strange lights moving through the trees, as well as a bright light from an unidentified object. After daybreak on the morning of 26 December, servicemen returned to the small clearing where the conical object had been seen, and found three small impressions in a triangular pattern, as well as burn marks and broken branches on nearby trees. Plaster casts of the imprints were taken and have been shown in television documentaries. Servicemen from RAF Woodbridge’s sister base, RAF Bentwaters, returned to the forest again, following another sighting in the early hours of 28 December 1980. The deputy base commander Lt Col Charles I. Halt recorded the events on a micro-cassette recorder. The site investigated by Halt was near the eastern edge of the forest, at approximately 52° 05 20 N, 1° 26 57 E. Later, lights were seen in the sky to the north and south, the brightest of which beamed down a stream of light.

The programme concentrated not just on the case itself but also the investigators: believers, former believers and skeptics. In this section the programme makers interviewed Vince Thurkettle, the local forester who was familiar with the site at which the UFO supposedly landed, and who was able to explain both the physical traces on the ground and the flashing light that was seen between the trees. The beginning of the audio has Dr. Hynek talking about an unrelated incident at Wright-Patterson AFB. Then the interview switches to the Pascagoula case, in which two fishing buddies claimed to have been abducted by strange-looking aliens. Hold on to your seats!
